"Clown Shoe Pilot" (csp)

The freight company finally got their paperwork squared away to provide lift gate service, and this arrived today! It’s a Quincy QT-5, a 2 stage 5HP splash lubricated compressor with an 80 gallon receiver. It weighs 700 pounds and runs on 30A 240VAC single phase electrical service. It’s almost entirely US made, except for some ancillary bits like the 1/4 turn ball valves.
It came on double stacked pallets and for a moment I was thinking to myself “How the hell am I going to get it off the pallets?” and then I remembered I had a bridge crane. This is the first proper lift I’ve made with the crane. My bridge crane isn’t COMPLETELY finished, but it was finished enough to get the job done.
Just prior to being lifted off the pallets:
and in its new home, hooked up to electricity:
Now I have to bolt it to the floor and pipe it. I’ll just put a single outlet on the side for the time being.

Nice, not nearly as sketchy as the time we took a manual mill off a pallet with an engine hoist.

I didn’t take pictures mid-move. It got REALLY sketchy. Take a look at my chain placement and see if you can figure out what happened.

I’m guessing it got a little tipsy.

More than a little. I had to go grab a neighbor to operate the hoist while I muscled it back up onto its feet.

Whoops! Luckily it didn’t get away from you.

Very nice! Are you going to build a box or booth around it to keep the sound down?

I am not. It’s low speed (under 1K RPM) so it’s not oppressively loud.

Very nice! I’m going to suggest you get some sort of rubber isolator to bolt it down through, it’ll really cut down the noise. Otherwise very nice!
I’m looking to get a huge compressor sometime soon-ish and I’m quite concerned as to how I’ll get it off the pallet/into place.

The manufacturer strongly suggests not using isolators for vertical receivers.

That’s cool.
Compressor noise is one of my pet peeves. I once worked at a shop that housed theirs in an insulated booth, and it was fantastic. I just picked up a used 15gal unit, and once I pick a spot for it, I’m going to do something to muffle it. ...even if I have to do something really cheap like staple bath towels to a cardboard box LOL.

Interesting! I’d take their advice over mine haha

Nice! I would be pissed if it was delivered on double pallets like that. Makes handling it more of a pain than it should be. But hell yeah!

I’d like a follow up about the noise once you get it running. I hate compressor noise.

I’ve already run it. It’s not oppressive. It’s not quiet, but it’s not THAT bad.

A couple feet of rubber hose between the compressor and the hard pipe does a good job of keeping the pipe rattling to a minimum.

Yep. That’s how my smaller compressor is done and it’s a good piece of technology.

We got so sick of compressor noise, our company bought a new one that comes in at 68db. It sounds like someone turned on the ac. It makes for an awesome working environment
